Yesterday, I made a quick trip to Pune from Mumbai. As a regular traveler on this expressway, I have long been a witness to how weekend journeys, especially on Sunday evenings, once turned into ordeals at the toll plazas. Endless queues, impatient drivers cutting lanes, tempers flaring, and precious time slipping away made chaos feel inevitable. With increasing traffic, this seemed only a multiplying problem.

Yet in the last few months, something remarkable has changed. The brilliance of redesigning and reshaping the toll stretch has transformed the experience completely. What was once a dreaded bottleneck is now a smooth passage. On a Sunday evening, I now zip through instead of crawling — grateful for the out-of-the-box thinking of a few geniuses who refused to accept congestion as destiny, and solved a problem for thousands.

If such ingenuity can transform an everyday inconvenience or ordinary frustrations of daily life, what then of the feats that redefine landscapes and test the limits of human resolve?

Rewind to June 6, 2025. India witnessed one such triumph when trains finally crossed the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world’s highest railway arch. It was the exhale of a dream spanning over two decades, the collective intake of breath as the impossible stood realized. I still picture the iconic photograph of Dr. G. Madhavi Latha of IISc, who devoted 17 years as a geotechnical consultant on the project, standing with arms outstretched across the bridge, radiating a serene sense of fulfilment. For me, it is etched as a symbol of quiet triumph. Behind that calm smile I feel that indomitable will — the perseverance to work shoulder-to-shoulder with on-ground teams, to tame treacherous terrain, unpredictable winds, and unforgiving conditions, until vision became reality.

These stories remind us that engineering is, at its heart, a covenant with complexity – a pledge to engage with uncertainty, solve for the improbable, and sign that promise over and over again. Engineers uphold this covenant across every domain of our lives — from crafting large, complex solutions that advance humanity to creating everyday innovations that make life simpler. Their impact continues to grow, expanding with every new frontier humanity dares to imagine and cross.

Engineering, therefore, isn’t merely about machines, bridges, codes, structures, or systems. It is a manifestation of a disciplined yet daring way of thinking, solving, and shaping — to challenge the status quo, imagine boldly, design rigorously, iterate relentlessly, and remain accountable to reality. Each equation, each blueprint, each line of code carries the imprint of an imaginative mind that dares to create order out of complexity. That is the engineering mindset this article celebrates, on this day dedicated to engineers - Engineers’ Day, commemorating the birth anniversary of Sir M. Visvesvaraya.

On this day, I bow in deep respect to Sir M. Visvesvaraya, whose vision, discipline, and pioneering contributions laid the very foundation of modern engineering in India. I also extend heartfelt gratitude to all engineers – for the bridges they build and the futures they design, for simplifying our lives today while leaving legacies that will endure for generations. In celebrating this day and honoring Sir Visvesvaraya, we also honor the timeless lessons of the engineering mindset — lessons of imagination, discipline, resilience, and progress that continue to shape humanity’s journey.



Timeless Lessons from Engineers

Where the world accepts limits or settles for ‘enough’, Engineers dare to challenge the status quo and push for continuous improvement.

Progress is never born from the comfort of “good enough.” The redesigned toll-gates on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway are proof — what once felt like inevitable chaos has now become smooth flow. Or consider how computers have evolved over the last 50 years, shrinking from room-sized machines into devices we carry in our palms. Engineers are restless, never content with stagnation; they question, challenge assumptions, search for alternatives, and dare to create what others dismiss as impossible. Their spirit of continuous improvement keeps stretching the boundaries of what humanity can be achieve.

Pause & Reflect: Where in your own life or work have you settled for “good enough”? What would daring to push a little further look like? When was the last time you asked yourself “what if?” and imagined beyond existing limits? What breakthrough might be waiting on the other side of that question?


Where the world’s path is blocked by obstacles or shaken by failure, Engineers see possibilities and persist – iterating relentlessly until solutions emerge.

Obstacles are not dead ends — they are data points and invitations to innovate. Behind every elegant bridge or seamless app lie dozens of failed prototypes. When rockets explode on test flights, engineers don’t surrender; they refine, rework, and try again until the launch breaks through. Failure is not defeat but feedback, and persistence is their craft. From the lightbulb to Chandrayaan, history is proof that endurance transforms setbacks into milestones. Where others give up, engineers endure — testing, refining, and iterating until possibility emerges from impossibility. It is their grit, steady and unyielding, that ultimately shapes reality.

Pause & Reflect: When faced with setbacks, do you stop at the barrier – or can you see it as a blueprint waiting to be redrawn? Do you see them as dead ends or as data points? What possibilities might open if you looked again? What feels unimaginable today that persistence could make ordinary tomorrow?


Where the world lets ideas drift or complexity overwhelm, Engineers anchor vision in meticulous detail, simplify the intricate, and execute with precision while balancing accuracy with purpose.

Big ideas mean little unless grounded in detail. A smartphone, for instance, packs thousands of intricate processes into something we casually slip into our pockets — proof of vision married to precision. Engineers live in that space between imagination and execution: they break overwhelming complexity into solvable parts, hold vision and detail together, and turn ideas into reality. For them, logic, structure, and project management are second nature — and execution is not just a task, it is their signature.

Pause & Reflect: Do your ideas stay in the realm of vision, or do you ground them in discipline and detail? When problems feel overwhelming, are you looking at execution discipline, step back to structure, organize, and design clarity out of chaos? In your pursuit of progress, are you moving fast but fragile — or balancing speed with execution discipline so what you build endures?


Where the world cries scarcity of resources or recklessness risks progress, Engineers optimize with ingenuity and advance through calculated, responsible steps.

Scarcity can paralyze, and recklessness can endanger. When water runs short, engineers design irrigation systems that make every drop count. When energy demand surges, they turn to renewables, proving that progress and sustainability can go hand in hand. Ingenuity becomes their compass – redefine the problem statement, stretch resources, find smarter ways, and ensure progress is not just fast but future-proof. True advancement, they remind us, is measured not only by speed alone but by the wisdom to ensure tomorrow is not compromised for today. And when it is, they return to their first learning – to improve, refine and try again.

Pause & Reflect: When resources are tight, do you feel paralyzed, or do you reframe the problem and find smarter ways? How might you treat constraints as catalysts for creativity rather than barriers to progress?


Where the world is divided by disciplines or stretched by ambition beyond reality, Engineers integrate across boundaries and resources, connect the dots, and hold systems together with coherence.

Innovation rarely thrives in silos. The Konkan Railway wasn’t just an act of civil engineering — it was a symphony of geology, hydrology, tunnelling, and systems management, stitching mountains to the coast with coherence and courage. Or take the case of biomedical engineering field - progress only happens when medicine meets design, computation, and material science. Engineers think systemically: they blend disciplines, balance interdependencies, and weave fragments into functional wholes. Their genius lies in seeing connections where others see divisions, creating harmony where complexity threatens to scatter. What emerges is not just infrastructure, but integration — solutions that endure because they are built on wholeness.

Pause & Reflect:  Do you find yourself building silos or bridges? What new connections could you make — across disciplines, teams, or ideas — to bring coherence where it is missing? How might you blend disciplines to create a whole greater than the sum of its parts?


Where the world is inspired by theories, engineers stay accountable to reality — testing, validating, and proving until imagination can stand firm.

Inspiration sparks possibility, but only validation builds trust. The Bandra–Worli Sea Link or the Coastal Road weren’t just a bold designs; they’ve become icons of Mumbai because every cable, load, and wind resistance were tested until the structure could stand safe against monsoon fury or coastal terrains. Engineers test rigorously, measure carefully, and hold every design accountable to real-world conditions. Their discipline ensures that imagination does not remain fantasy, but transforms into reality that works, lasts, and inspires confidence.

Pause & Reflect: Are your ideas staying at the level of inspiration, or are you testing them against reality? Do your solutions truly serve people — improving lives and connections — or are they only impressive on paper?


In conclusion:

As we honor the legacy of Sir M. Visvesvaraya, let us also celebrate the millions of unsung engineers whose quiet brilliance powers the rhythm of our daily lives. From the bridges we cross and the devices we hold, to the medical breakthroughs that heal us and the sustainable technologies that protect our planet — their work is woven into the fabric of our existence.

In essence, engineering is leadership in action: the courage to embrace complexity, the discipline to pursue excellence, and the vision to design a future better than the present. These are timeless lessons for each of us as we shape our own leadership journeys. The engineer’s blueprint is not confined to machines or structures; it is a way of thinking, a way of living, and a guiding compass for leaders everywhere.
