Defying the Odds: A Story of Resilience, Love, and the Will to Fight
By Anupama Vaidya.
Some stories stay with you long after the credits roll. Last week, by sheer chance, I watched 'I Want to Talk', and it left me deeply moved. Based on the true & deeply inspiring story of Arjun Sen, who stood at the edge of despair yet found the courage to rewrite his fate. It is a testament to resilience, love, & the will to fight against impossible odds.
At just 32, Arjun was handed a devastating prognosis of cancer with only 100 days to live. His world crumbled in an instant. But sometimes, in our darkest moments, a single spark reignites the will to fight. For Arjun, that spark came from his daughter. Her innocent yet heart-wrenching words cut through his fear:
“𝗗𝗮𝗱, 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴? 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝘆 𝘄𝗲𝗱𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴?”
In that moment, he knew - he had to fight. Not just for himself, but for her. For the life yet to be lived.
What followed was nothing short of extraordinary. Through 20 grueling surgeries, relentless treatments, and battles that tested his very essence, Arjun defied the impossible. He transformed from a man bracing for the end into a symbol of unwavering hope and resilience.
As I played the movie, I rewound the scene when his daughter is shown grown up, thinking I missed something, and then finally leaving me in awe, the real Arjun Sen appears on screen, standing strong, sharing his story. Not after 100 days, but an incredible 10,482 days later. I replayed this part five times, absorbing every second.
His presence alone was a testament to the boundless strength of the human spirit - proof that determination, love, and sheer willpower can bend the rules of fate.
Arjun’s story is not just his own. It belongs to every warrior who has faced cancer and refused to let it define them. It belongs to the caregivers, the families, the medical heroes who stand by them. It belongs to anyone who has ever fought against impossible odds and emerged stronger. #MightyMe

And while Arjun’s story is one of triumph, not everyone gets that chance. I still carry the pain of losing one of my dearest friends, Prahlad Somaiyya, who used to fondly call me "Kalubai" for a character I had enacted along with him where he played the role of the "Pradhanji" in school. Losing him three decades ago – just a day after his prognosis, was shocking and till date it still occupies my mindshare. He and his family never even had a chance to fight against this battle of life. The helplessness they felt lingers, as do the fond memories of our childhood and school days together.
On 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐃𝐚𝐲, I bow to the resilience of survivors who, with their indomitable willpower, continue to fight, inspire, and redefine the meaning of strength every single day; bow to the memories of those we have lost and the tireless dedication of 'Doctors', 'Nurses' and 'Families' who fight this battle every day. Cancer shakes us, but it also reveals something profound - the courage we never knew we had.
May Arjun’s journey remind us all that while we cannot always control what life gives us, we can always choose how we fight. Let this day be a celebration of that choice. A celebration of life. A celebration of #MightyMe.
Let’s take a moment to honour the #mightyme amongst us today.
