Resonance with Divinity: A Journey Through the Symbolism of Lord Shiva

Ponderings by Anupama Vaidya.

Series: Inspiring Lessons from Spirituality - IL-4.

Growing up in a family deeply rooted in unwavering faith in the potency of Lord Shiva; the past year has  not only enriched my understanding but also broadened my horizons through immersive experiences, allowing me to resonate with the profound vibrations emanating from the divine. Viewing my life as a series of miracles along my spiritual journey, each passing year and day continually strengthen my unwavering faith in the divine force.

In my teenage years, fasting on Mahashivratri and listening to the stories held a certain significance. However, as the years passed and I gained more experiences, I found a deeper connection, allowing me to truly grasp the profound meaning behind the symbolic representation of Lord Shiva.

Lord Shiva representing the aspect of destruction; holds a high significance along with Lord Bramha (the creator) and Lord Vishnu (the preserver) in the cosmic cycle of creation, preservation and destruction.

This Mahashivratri, in continuation to my series of 'Inspiring Lessons from Spirituality', let’s dedicate a few moments to embark on a meaningful exploration of our inner selves, transitioning from the physical realm to the soulful depths within. Let’s engage in contemplation, pondering the symbolic representation of Lord Shiva and delving into its profound significance for each of us.

Symbolic representation – Destruction.

What does destruction mean for me? Can I go beyond the physical aspects, and harness its essence to dismantle my biases, liberate myself from preconceived notions, relinquish the weight of the past & release the grip of these experiences for fresh starts & renewal? Am I applying destruction for fostering personal growth, opening doors for new beginnings and regeneration, allowing me to embark on a new and more enlightened journey? Destruction paves way to Transformation & new Beginnings.

Symbolic representation – Renunciation & Ascetism.

How can I draw inspiration from the ascetic qualities of Lord Shiva to cultivate a deeper connection with my own spiritual essence, fostering a lifestyle aligned with simplicity, mindfulness, and detachment from worldly distractions? Do I ponder upon the profound meaning of the ascetic lifestyle within my own journey? Embracing Renunciation & Asceticism becomes a pathway to Mindfulness and spiritual enrichment.

Symbolic representation – Supreme Yogi & Meditation.

Am I actively tending to the power within, akin to the 'third eye,' acknowledging its potential for personal growth and enlightenment?  How am I preserving and enhancing its influence through self-realisation and spiritual awakening?  From Meditation arises the journey of Transcendence & Excellence.

Symbolic representation – Mahakaal or the Great Time.

How does this cyclical understanding of time, encompassing creation, preservation and destruction, prompt me to reassess my perception of existence and the seamless flow of life's phases? Do I genuinely value time, or am using it as an excuse to evade certain endeavours? Harness the power of Mahakaal for personal growth and transformation.

Symbolic representation – Bholenath, the Lord of Compassion.

Am I sensitive to the dual nature that mirrors destruction on one side and compassion on the other?  How do I deal with the co-existence of my compassion within my being?  In what ways does the benevolent aspect of the divine shape my understanding of compassion and generosity in my own life? Bholenath serves as a catalyst to awaken my empathy and sensitivity.

As I embark on this Mahashivratri’s fast, these contemplative questions serve as nourishment for the  soul, more fulfilling than any meal! Lord Shiva, my eternal source of inspiration, strength, and guidance; embodies the roles of Protector, the Navigator to inner peace, and the Fortitude to confront life’s challenges. The profound symbolism linked with Lord Shiva urges us to embrace change, cultivate detachment, and pursue spiritual evolution on our life’s journey. In these reflections, I find sustenance that extends beyond the physical, guiding me towards a deeper understanding of self and the divine.
