Inspiring Lessons from Day 6 of Navratri : Maa Katyayani by Anupama Vaidya

giving birth to the epitome of valor, wisdom, and divine leadership in form of
Skanda, Lord Kartikeya, Goddess Durga on Day 6 manifests that valor through her
extreme fierce representation as Goddess Katyaayani.
In her
form as Goddess Katyayani, she is renowned for defeating the formidable demon
Mahishasura, who had wrought extreme havoc. Sage Katyayan's prayers harnessed
the anger energies of the gods, resulting in the birth of Goddess Katyaayani, a
manifestation of Goddess Durga. She was bestowed with cosmic energies and
multiple weapons to vanquish the demon.
This
serves as a remarkable lesson on transforming righteous anger into constructive
energy. It emphasizes that anger, when driven by a sense of justice, can be a
catalyst for positive change, motivating people to unite, collaborate, and
address negativity and injustice. The representation of sage Katyayan
highlights the importance of managing anger and heated discussions with
practice and patience, ultimately leading to more productive conversations,
healthier relationships, and a more positive environment.
Known
as the Warrior Goddess, Goddess Katyayani is depicted as a powerful, youthful
and radiant deity with golden complexion and distinctive characteristics
exuding her strength and grace:

4 arms holding symbolic objects that exude her strength and grace. A
sword, lotus, kamandalu while displaying the Abhay-mudra (bestowing boons –
blessings). Represent her attributes of courage, purity, and the ability to bestow
blessings.

She is adorned with various ornaments, including necklaces and bangles
and earrings signifying divine beauty and elegance.
·
She typically rides a lion, symbolizing her fearlessness, courage and
strength. The lion also signifies the triumph over inner and outer demons,
showcasing her power and strength.
As the
Goddess who brought down the demon Mahishasurah, the legend, describes her
valor of fighting with her extreme shrewdness to kill Mahishasura who assumed
the form of a buffalo. She tricked him by climbing on his back, placing her
foot on his neck and piercing him with her trishul and cutting off his head.
Therefore also known as Mahishasura Mardani the one who killed and defeated
Mahishasura
This
fierce depiction of Goddess, is a way to reinforce to us to fight our demons,
inner and outer with courage, valor, strategy, taking on what no one really had
been able to conquer and free ourselves from the clutches negativity.
One
very important lesson she leaves in our thoughts is that to fight injustice you
need to stand up, with a presence of mind, be insightful, be shrewd. You can’t
be naïve, you cannot be shaken up, stirred and stop applying your intellect.
Her calling on Mahishasura to fight a battle when he wants to her to marry him,
just perfectly demonstrates these qualities. It’s a depiction of how to deal
with such challenging and difficult people.
It cautions you also for not nurturing the demon within you.
